18 others appointed to city boards and commissions
Gilroy – The city’s former tourism chief will help craft Gilroy’s future art scene as one of two new members on the Arts & Culture Commission.
Former Visitor’s Bureau Director Kirstin Carr was among 19 residents city council appointed Monday night to serve on various boards and commissions.
While she emphasized her experience in drawing tourists to the city during an interview earlier this month, Carr said after her appointment that “I’m fortunate in that I do have a background in performing arts so I do have that perspective to drawn on as well.”
Both talents will likely be called on as the city moves forward with the creation of a downtown arts and culture center, scheduled to open in the next four years.
On Monday, the council also selected applicants for two seats on the Planning Commission – a body that will soon exercise greater authority over the city’s land-use decisions. Council chose community activist Arthur Barron and Parks and Recreation Commissioner Joan Spencer to fill the vacancies, created by the departure of Dion Bracco, now a council member, and Cat Tucker, who had reached the two-term limit for the commission.
Tucker has not given up on community involvement, however, securing one of two available seats on the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission.
