Go mustangs!

GHS defeated the host school 2-0 in the finals
After suffering an unofficial loss in a scrimmage against Live Oak on Thursday night, the Gilroy High field hockey team used the “intense” matchup with the Acorns as a driving force toward its 4-0 record and tournament championship at the Leigh Longhorn roundup Friday and Saturday in San Jose.

“Our team chemistry is really good right now,” GHS head coach Adam Gemar said.

The Mustangs beat Los Altos, which will host GHS in the Mount Hamilton Division opener Wednesday, 2-1 to begin tournament play Friday.

Following a 1-0 win against Saratoga and a 6-0 drubbing of Chico, the Mustangs received a bye in the semifinals to advance through to the finals where a 2-0 triumph over host school Leigh ensued.

Gemar pointed out the play of junior Monica Marrazzo, sophomore Emma Leach, who earned the team’s player of the game award after the finals victory, goalie Marissa Mazzone and senior captain Ashlee Williams.

Wednesday’s league tilt at Los Altos is slated for 3:30 p.m.
