GILROY – For the first time this season, the Gilroy High girls golf team finished with a combined team score of under 200 – finishing up its Tri-County Athletic League schedule with Thursday’s 199-217 nod over Santa Catalina.

Leading the way for the Lady Mustangs at Gilroy Golf Course were medalist Kristen Campos (49), and teammates Carissa Filice (51) and Andrea Hugo (51). Also helping Gilroy reach its team goal were Jackie Iwanaga (65) and Carla Navarro (75).

“We always played well at Gilroy and the girls feel comfortable there. I hope that we take this momentum on to league finals on Monday,” head coach Eric Kuwada said. “Any of the top four girls are capable of qualifying for CCS. They have to play smart, consistent golf at Salinas CC. The course is not any harder than we have played and some of them know it from last year.”

If the Lady Mustangs shoot 100 or less, they qualify for the Central Coast Section meet – which is scheduled for Nov. 4 followed by the Nov. 11 Northern California meet.

“The key is that they know when they are in trouble to get out of trouble and avoid the ‘blow up ‘ holes,” Kuwada said. “They will have to play well, and from some of their scores this season, they have the potential… They know what they need to do.”
