Gilroy – A fire burned through the roof of one Gilroy home and threatened nearby homes Sunday night.

No one was in the single-family home at 8416 Doris Court, off Welburn Avenue, when the fire was reported at 9:13pm, according to the Gilroy Fire Department.

The blaze extensively damaged much of the home, particularly the roof, but the interior contained very little furniture because the house was being refurbished, Division Chief Clay Bentson said Monday.

Neighboring homes were threatened, he said, but suffered no damage.

“They had some pretty good exposure hazard there, initially,” Bentson said.

Two GFD engines and one rescue vehicle arrived on the scene in four minutes. Two engines from the South Santa Clara County Fire District and two engines from the California Department of Forestry also responded, and the two-alarm blaze was contained in about one hour.

Firefighters had to contend with power lines hanging over the burning roof of the house, Bentson said. The fire burned a portion of the lines, which disconnected and fell. Crews from Pacific Gas & Electric responded and temporarily shut down the lines as a precaution, he said.

The cause is under investigation.

“We believe it to be possibly electrically related, but it’s still undetermined, it’s still under investigation,” Division Chief Clay Bentson said Monday.

A damage estimates was not available Monday.
