Firefighters from the Gilroy Fire Department Chestnut Station responded to reports of illegal dumping at about 3:45 p.m. Thursday in a field near 300 Obata Court.

According to Fire Chief Dale Foster one of the local business owners in the area placed the call around 3:30 p.m.

“This is what we call an environmentally conscious dumper,” he said, noting whoever discarded the containers took care to not spill them over during the unloading process, which likely happened at night.

Foster indicated to an otherwise aesthetic field; its green landscape blotted by what he said were five 55-gallon drums of motor oil.

During scenarios such as this, he said personnel from Building, Life and Environmental Safety Department with the City of Gilroy handles situations involving chemical containment.

Several minutes later Chemical Control Specialist Jonathan Crick arrived on scene.

“Next we’ll get the property owner, let them know there’s hazardous waste and that it needs to be rid of,” said GFD firefighter Tim Price.

The suspects responsible for the dumping are still at large.
