The Gilroy Browns lost to Southern Marin Broncos 24-22 Saturday in the Peninsula Pop Warner Division II championship at Kings Academy.
The Broncos took an early 16-0 lead. But Gilroy closed the gap to 16-6 in the second quarter. Brandon Bumanlag ran a sweep to the right side to the 4-yard line. And Noah Laine punched it in for the touchdown.
In the third quarter, Dylan Holler ran for a 30-yard touchdown behind blocks from Anthony Lealau, Eddie Vargas, Jamie Martinez, Gaven Doyle, Slader Basso, Andrew Brisby, Connor Robinson, Art Gomez, Laine, Bumanlag and a huge hit from Christian Rodriguez. The extra point attempt by Daven Haro was good to make the score 16-14.
However, the Broncos returned the ensuing kickoff after missed tackles and converted the extra point to go up 24-14.
Gilroy received the ball on the 40-yard line and charged down the field with a mixture of running and passing plays. As the fourth quarter started, Laine took the handoff and scored a touchdown. Haro again came through with the extra point kick, making the score 24-22.
