Following another lopsided victory, Anchorpoint Christian awaits
true test
Head coach KC Adams and the Anchorpoint Christian Warriors football team thought they were up against their stiffest competition three weeks ago when Volunteer Christian Academy visited Gilroy. The game was called at halftime with the Warriors up 54-0.
Since that game, the Warriors have had two Coastal Athletic League opponents cancel. And on Saturday, Anchorpoint defeated Alma Heights Christian Academy 62-8 in non-league action.
Most starters on offense saw minimal action due to the score, Adams said, including leading rusher Kareem Lucas, who still racked up 113 yards on three carries.
The Warriors haven’t played a game that has been closer than 30 points since a 40-40 tie with Marina a year and a half ago. Marina now plays 11-man football in the Mission Trail Athletic League.
“The thing about it is that I feel bad for the kids,” Adams said. “They have missed two weeks of games. Sometimes our practices are a lot harder than our games.
“It’s a tough thing this year.”
The Warriors, ranked 10th in the state accoring to maxpreps.com, have two more league games (Pinewood at home on Saturday night and Stuart Hall on the road in San Francisco) but what has the team’s mouths watering is a Nov. 13 appointment with the state’s 13th-ranked squad, Christian Life Academy out of Escondito.
Though Adams and his crew aren’t looking past their final two league titls of the season, the smell of an opponent at the same level of play is enticing.
“We are looking forward to that game. That’s going to be high-caliber football, finally,” Adams said. “I still have two more games against other people. I don’t want to look past them. We are going to take those one at a time, but we are really looking forward to that last one.”
The Warriors have bombarded opponents to the tune of 390-74 through seven games. During Saturday’s victory, the Warriors churned up 217 yards on the ground, led by Lucas’ 113 and another 66 by Jordan Suniga and 29 from Zach Clinger.
Quarterback Matt Garay completed 4-of-5 passes for 92 yards and one touchdown.
Clinger, Suniga, Lucas, Garay, Austin Keathley and Ruban Alnas all recorded touchdowns in the win.
“I’m happy for the kids that we will get this game,” Adams said. “Having them play a top-notch team in the state, not only will let us see where we stand for real, but it allows them to play the whole game.”
Though you will not here Adams complain about the way his team wins, the desire to pit his kids against the best in the state is sometimes easier said than done.
“You have to have the money to travel,” Adams said. “Getting the games in L.A. isn’t the problem. But half of them will say ‘you come to us.’ Now you’re talking about money for five weekends a season down south. I’m not at that level yet. I’m going to get to that level, I guarantee it. Right now, people are starting to understand and are willing to fundraise. I’d like to take this as far as I can. We are going to be good for at least the next couple of years. I might as well prepare for it.”
The Christian Life Academy Eagles, who are on a three-game winning streak, are 6-2 on the year. Their two losses came against the No. 1-team in the state, Faith Baptist in Week 1 and the No. 6 team, Cate.
The Eagles average 213 rushing yards per game led by A.J. Buffini, who has 909 yards through seven games. Buffini also takes the snaps and has connected on 39-of-73 passes, including 12 touchdowns.
