Even with all of the publicity the City of Gilroy has put into its recruitment campaign, two seats on the Public Art Committee remain to be filled.

City Clerk Shawna Freels is surprised by the lack of interest in the positions.

“We’ve been at this recruitment effort for two months now and haven’t had anyone apply,” she said.

According to an information flyer posted on the City of Gilroy website, the applicants would serve four-year terms that would end Dec. 31, 2016. The Public Art Committee works in an advisory capacity to the Arts and Culture Commission, and is responsible for developing and enhancing visual art within the local community.

As Gilroy continues its push for downtown modernization and beautification, this recruitment drive offers the chance for a couple of local visionaries to change the look and feel of the town through the most visceral of mediums.
