SANTA CLARA – Free income tax assistance is now available in Santa Clara County through VITA, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, a joint effort of the Internal Revenue Service and the State Franchise Tax Board.

VITA volunteers, who are trained by the IRS, can alert taxpayers to special credits and deductions such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which for 2002 allows up to $4,140 for working families.

VITA, now celebrating its 33rd year of service, helps the elderly, low-income, the disabled, and non-English speaking taxpayers fill out simple, basic Federal tax forms such as Forms 1040-EZ, 1040-A, 1040, and the basic State tax forms 540-EZ and 540-A. Many VITA sites offer free electronic filing (e-file) – for a faster refund.

In Gilroy, help is available at the Gavilan College Library building, room 101-A, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Wednesdays: 5 to 8:30 p.m. through April 9, Spanish assistance available.

For an appointment, call 848-4790.
