Gilroy – Integrated Waste Management of Santa Clara County is hosting a tire dump this weekend in San Martin. Residents may dump as many as four tires of any size for free, but only by appointment.
Residents will learn the location when they make their appointments. Tires must be off the rim.
Lisa Rose, a senior analyst with Integrated Waste Management, said the county may collect as many as 12,000 tires Saturday.
So far nearly 200 residents have made appointments. She said old tires pose a significant waste and health threat to the county.
“A lot of tires are illegally dumped and end up on the side of the road or in creeks,” Rose said. Tires that are just lying around collect rain water and become a breeding ground for West Nile Virus.”
The tires collected Saturday will be hauled away and recycled. For a fee, residents can drop off tires year-round at the San Martin Transfer Station on LLagas Avenue. Fees ranges from $15 for an automobile tire to $50 a large tractor tire.
The free dump is not at the transfer station. To make an appointment for Saturday’s free tire drop off, call 299-7300.
