Three arrested on unrelated charges
Gilroy – Gilroy’s underground erupted into view about 2:30am Sunday morning, when an alleged gang member stabbed someone outside the Krazy Koyote Bar and Grill, 8337 Church St. The incident is still being investigated, and no stabbing-related charges have been filed.
“I’d characterize this as an inner-gang conflict,” said Gilroy officer Joseph Deras, who estimated that eight or 10 cars responded to the incident, closing down Church Street to rope off the crime scene. “These guys don’t have a real long history with the Anti-Crime Team,” which deals with gang crime, “but we’re aware of them.”
Suffering upper-body wounds, the stabbing victim was flown to a Bay Area trauma center, said Deras, and survived. Another person at the scene was knocked out, he said, but he was unsure whether he had received medical attention.
Police arrested two adults and a juvenile at the scene on unrelated charges. Security guards directed police to stop Wally Renteria, 23, of San Jose, who was driving away from the bar when officers stopped him on Church Street, just south of Welburn Avenue. When a handgun was found under Renteria’s seat, he was arrested on a slew of charges: being a convicted felon with access to a handgun, possession of a firearm in a vehicle, and driving with a suspended license.
His 17-year-old passenger ran from the car, and was arrested for resisting an officer. Both Renteria and the 17-year-old face enhanced penalties for gang involvement. Louie Vallez, 19, of Gilroy, was also arrested on a probation violation.
“Krazy Koyote was very co-operative,” said Deras. “When something like this happens, it can really tax your resources. There’s a large area to control, and a lot of witnesses in the area. Thankfully, we had all the resources we needed.”
