The Gilroy Garlic Festival Foundation had a spicy year, raising $255,000 for 170 local schools, charities and other non-profits. In the festival’s 40-year history, over $11.7 million has been raised for local non-profits.
In 1979, the founders of the Gilroy Garlic Festival created the Volunteer Equity Program to help convert volunteer hours into monetary donations for charity. This year more than 4,000 volunteers came together to make the 40th Garlic Festival another success.
“The reason the Gilroy Garlic Festival is still going strong after 40 years is because of the energy and enthusiasm of our volunteers,” 2018 Gilroy Garlic Festival president Todd Trekell said.” It’s very rewarding to see their hard work translate directly into much-needed funding for many of our community’s most valued organizations.”
For 2018, the top five beneficiaries are Live Oak Emerald Regime $11,788, Gilroy High School Football $8,601, Victory Outreach $8,580, Christopher High School CAT Boosters $7,474, and Gilroy Gators Swim Team $7,346. Over $90,000 was raised by volunteers working on behalf of Gilroy Unified School District groups and organizations
