Gilroy – Eco-friendly eating has earned the Gilroy Garlic Festival Association a gold Pinnacle Award from the International Festivals & Events Association, a nonprofit organization with more than 2,000 members.

The festival won the award for feeding its roughly 3,800 volunteers using biodegradable plates and utensils during the event, according to Richard Nicholls, the GFA’s executive director.

“If you had a pepper steak and bottle of water, everything but the steak and the foil wrapping can be recycled,” he said.

This is the first time the festival has won in the environmental category. The association usually wins at least one prize each year, typically in the marketing or promoting categories, Nicholls said. In 2004, the festival again pulled down two awards in those areas – one bronze medal for its commemorative poster and another for the festival pamphlet’s cover design.
