Gavilan coach Nikki Dequin-Thompson says she can accept errors as long as the team doesn’t allow them to carry over to ensuing batters.

The Rams committed more than their share of errors Wednesday, and yet they were able to shake off four miscues as they edged City College of San Francisco 2-1 in a Coast Conference contest in Gilroy.

“The defense committed some errors, but the pitchers allowed it to roll off their backs and get the next out,” Dequin-Thompson said. “It was amazing that we were able to commit four errors and come back and win.”

Jen McBain and Haylie Cloud combined on a five-hitter and had six strikeouts, and Amanda Rosevear came up with the clutch hits as Gavilan (11-24, 5-13) overcame a tremendous pitching effort by Michele McMahon.

CCSF scored an unearned run in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Allison Der singled. After a hit batter, McMahon was safe on an error as Der scored.

The Rams fought back in the bottom of the inning as Rosevear doubled down the left-field line and scored when a ball hit by Angelina Fernandez was misplayed in center.

In the seventh, McBain tripled and scored on Rosevear’s single.

Other than that, McMahon was in control, no-hitting Gavilan through four innings and finishing with a four-hitter and eight strikeouts. Amanda Perez’s sixth-inning single was the only other Ram hit.

“She was on her game,” Dequin-Thompson said of McMahon.

The Rams were not on theirs defensively, and yet they did enough good things to beat CCSF for the third time in four decisions this season.

“I’m very happy with this win,” Dequin-Thompson said. “The time off for spring break did us good. We started picking up toward the end of the game. Hopefully, it will continue for us.”

Wednesday’s game was the first of four in the next three days for the Rams. Gavilan is at Monterey Peninsula College at 3pm today and then hosts De Anza College in a doubleheader at 1pm Friday.
