Gavilan got one step closer to a playoff berth with a 5-2 win at West Valley Tuesday.
Adrianna Ortega was stellar, racking up three RBIs, scoring two runs and hitting a homer against the Colts.
The Rams held a 2-1 lead until the top of the fifth where they scored three runs. West Valley answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn’t enough to escape Gavilan.
Paige Miguel (19-5) was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out two in seven innings.
Just one win separates Gavilan (24-9 overall, 10-4 in conference) from first place Cabrillo. Both have just two games left in the regular season—the last of which is against each other at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Aptos.
Gavilan will be back in action at 3 p.m. Thursday to play at San Jose City College.

Colts edge Gavilan
Despite falling ahead early, Gavilan kept fighting to remain in the game. Unfortunately, the Rams fell just short. They lost their third straight, 6-5 to Canada College at home Tuesday.
The visitors posted a four-spot in the top of the first which went unanswered until the bottom of the third. With runners in scoring position, DJ Santellano reached on an error to allow Andrew Bueno to score. Adam Kocina doubled on the next play to score Landon Cord and move Santello to third. A Danny Gutierrez single brought him home and cut Canada’s lead to 4-3.
But the momentum was short lived. Canada answered with two runs in the top of the fourth, regaining a firm grip on the lead at 6-3.
Gutierrez hit an two-RBI double—which scored Santellano and Aaron Wallace—in the bottom of the fifth, but that was all the Rams were able to muster up.
Gutierrez led the team with three hits, three RBIs and a stolen base. Cord and Kocina both had two hits for Gavilan.
Taylor Hussey was the losing pitcher, allowing six runs on seven hits, two walks while striking out four through eight innings of work.
Gavilan will look to rebound with a 2:30 p.m. game against Mission College Thursday.
