Gavilan Roundup: March 17

After losing in Day 1 of the March Madness Tournament, the Gavilan softball team was able to turn its luck around.
The Rams easily handled Shasta 10-3 Sunday in Fremont.

The Rams (15-5, 4-1) dropped their first game, 5-1, to Ohlone Saturday in six innings. Victoria Lobato was handed the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work. She also walked six and struck out three.
Gavilan will return home to host Mission College at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Cabrillo’s late run lifts it past Gavilan
Gavilan’s Scott Tall gave a stellar performance on the mound, but the Rams weren’t able to seal the deal.
Gavilan’s skid continued with a 4-3 loss to Cabrillo at home Saturday. It has now lost five straight.
The teams were locked in a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth when Cabrillo’s Matthew Vald hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Nazereth Thi for the final as the Rams were unable to answer.
Tall got the start, throwing six and a third innings and giving up five hits and two walks but only one run. DJ Santellano was handed the loss, allowing one run on no hits, two walks and a strikeout in two innings of work.
Gavilan (7-12, 1-6) struck first in the bottom of the second when Aaron Wallace singled, but advanced to second while Jake Conlan scored on an error by the Cabrillo pitcher. 
In the bottom of the sixth, Conlan reached on an error by the second basemen, allowing Andrew Bueno to score, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Conlan was 2 for 4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. Wallace was 1 for 2 with a run, an RBI and a walk. 
Cabrillo answered with a run of its own in the top of the seventh, but Gavilan quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning. Santellano reached on an error by the first basemen allowing Wallace to score. The visitors would go on to score two runs in the top of the eighth to tie the game.
Gavilan will try to right its ship at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at City College of San Francisco.
