Pleasant Hill – Diablo Valley College jumped on the Gavilan Rams for 10 points in the first 3:03 of action on the way to a convincing 45-0 triumph in non-Coast Conference football play on the winners’ turf Friday night.
Gavilan, burdened with poor field position throughout the first half, mustered just eight yards and two first downs through penalties as the Vikings built a 24-0 cushion by the break.
Viking kicker Anthony Binzwanger was instrumental in keeping the Rams deep in their own territory. The kicker drilled four kick-offs into the end zone in the first half, the lone attempt at a return resulting in a Ram series starting at the Gavilan 17.
Although Diablo Valley kicked off to begin the contest, the Vikes needed just 52 seconds to gain possession, run three plays and have Binzwanger punch a 26-yard field goal through the uprights.
After the Rams gave up the ball by fumble on the game’s first play, the offense needed just two plays to cough up the ball to the Vikes at the Ram 8 on the second Gavilan possession. Diablo Valley’s Jason Palmer scored the game’s first touchdown on a one-yard bolt with 11:57 left in the first quarter.
Ram quarterback Matt Virus’ first pass attempt of the game was intercepted at the Gavilan 40. Viking wide-out Cameron Barton collected a 15-yard TD pass for a 17-0 edge with 2:55 to play in the quarter.
The Vikings (3-1) did little else the remainder of the half, finishing with five total first downs.
