As if their 926 Academic Performing Index Score doesn’t already merit bragging rights (California’s benchmark is 800), four students in the Dr. TJ Owens Early College Academy – an alternative high school known as GECA located on the campus of Gavilan College at 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd – schooled the SAT.
According to GECA Principal Mary Ann Boylan, the odds of one student receiving perfect scores in two areas of the SAT (the nation’s most widely used college admission exam) are one in 5,152.
But that didn’t stop Michelle Nguyen, 16, from beating them.
Out of 1,530,128 SAT takers, the junior was one of 8,833 who scored 800 on her critical reading test; and one of 4,946 who scored 800 on her writing test.
Nguyen is joined in her success by Marina Moro, 18; a senior who scored 800 in writing, Charley Cui, 16; a senior who scored 800 on his chemistry exam, and Nishant Desai, 16; a senior who is one of 10,052 students to score an 800 in math.
“Needless to say, we are proud of the job our students are doing,” wrote Boylan in an email. “There were many other students scoring well into the 700s, some just missing the perfect 800 mark.”
Overall, GECA’s SAT statistics are as follows:
– 68 percent scored in the 75th percentile and above in mathematics.
– 44 percent scored in the 75th percentile in writing
– 67 percent scored above the 75th percentile in reading
