It’s usually just a minor nuisance, but squeaky floors can be enough to drive some people crazy. There are many different reasons that cause floors to squeak – poor design, faulty materials and even nature. If the wood is not too deteriorated, you may be able to fix it in a couple easy steps.
Here are a few tips for keeping your house quiet when you walk.
Squeaks arise from gaps between the flooring, maybe because of a loose nail. If you have access to the under side of the floor, you can add a support to help hold the floor in place, according to a tutorial at www.diynetwork.com. Kits are available such as Squeak-Relief.
Screws can also be inserted into the floor from above to fix the squeak using kits such as Squeeeeek No More.
You can purchase a specialty screw kit for around $30. But there are also some available under $10. These screws are drilled into the floor and then broken off below the surface, according to a tutorial at factsfacts.com/MyHomeRepair/squeak.htm. They can be used for both hardwood and carpeted floors.
If your house is old and deteriorating, you may need professional help to eliminate squeaky floors. There may be other problems like rotten wood or termites that will require additional work.
