Geyser Erupts After Truck Backs Into Hydrant

San Martin – A 30-foot geyser burst from a hydrant on Highland Avenue when a repairman accidentally backed over it just before 11am Tuesday morning, flooding the street and nearly splashing overhead power lines. Most of the water was diverted into a nearby drain, said Sheriff’s Lt. Dale Unger.

“Otherwise, this street would probably be a lake,” he said.

When repairman Martin Juarez backed up over the hydrant, he was en route to his next job. Unger applauded him for staying at the scene.

“You did the right thing,” added Sheriff’s Sgt. Joe Waldherr. “Besides – no one got hurt.”

Firefighters from the South Santa Clara County Fire District worked to stop the hydrant, which proved frustrating after the hydrant key didn’t fit. After roughly 40 minutes, the geyser dropped to a burble, then stopped.

Gavilan College Good for Six More Years

Gilroy – The Western Association of Schools and Colleges reaffirmed a six-year accreditation of Gavilan College.

The commission commended the college for its efforts to increase enrollment, use of a strategic plan, disability resource center, “model” human resources office, liquidation of college debt and “collaborative” president, Steve Kinsella.

The commission recommended that the college refocus its strategic plan on student learning outcomes, evaluate its planning and facilities improvement process, and conduct regular evaluations of adjunct faculty members.
