Mustangs Pounded by Salinas, Can't Clinch Title

The junior varsity baseball team went home happy Tuesday night after smashing Alisal 20-4. As the offense racked up the runs, Jose Gamboa and Taylor Chris were strong on the mound.

The boys’ freshman team started off its game against the Trojans slowly. With Matt Elson on the mound, the Mustangs hoped to get their sixth win of the season. Gilroy broke the game open by scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning. With the help of relievers Tyler Price and Nick Robles, the Mustangs were able to hold Alisal at bay and won 12-2. The Mustangs improved to 6-8 overall.

On the girls’ side, the JV softball team defeated Alisal 8-0. Ashley Harrington shut the Trojans out, while her offense took care of the rest.

The freshman Mustangs got their fourth win of the season on Tuesday against the Trojans. Pitcher Brenna O’Neill allowed four runs and hit two home runs. Marissa Gamboa also contributed with her grand slam in the fourth inning. This win brought the squad to a 4-8 record.

In boys’ JV volleyball, Gilroy defeated Alisal 25-14, 25-8 Tuesday, and came up just short against TCAL front-runner Monterey on Thursday before falling 25-23, 26-24.

The JV track squad faced a challenge Tuesday at Hollister against San Benito. Many of their usual members were pulled up to the varsity squad leaving the team with competitors in very few events. Despite this, many team members were able to set personal records and score some points for the Mustangs. Kristina Schimidt finished with a personal best of 14:23 in the 2-mile event.

The junior varsity gymnastics squad took first place in a recent met against St Francis, Tracy and West high schools. With leaders such as Kayla Loving Scott (first in the vault, fourth on the bars seventh on the beam, second on the floor and second all-around) and Katie Kishimura (first on bars, seventh on beam, first on floor, third all-around), the team was able to lead the competition with a score of 178.350.

Other girls who added to this effort were Shannon Hubbard (third vault, sixth bars, fifth floor), Jenna Stuenkel (second vault, eighth floor) Savanna Dalke (second bars, first beam) Christine Dudek (fourth vault, ninth floor) and Christa Calimpong (ninth bars, fourth beam) and Ashley Fellows (eleventh all around.)
