The Gilroy wrestling team cruised to 2-0 in Tri-County Athletic League competition with a 77-6 team win against North Salinas in Salinas Wednesday night.
“We gave up a forfeit at 103 pounds and then pinned the next 13 weights,” said Gilroy head coach Armando Gonzalez. “Everybody won their matches pretty handily.”
Leading the way for Gilroy was Chris Krough at 135 pounds, who pinned his opponent in the third round.
“He had probably their toughest guy and he did a great job,” Gonzalez said.
Ismael Gutierrez (152 pounds), Ethan Ogle (145 pounds) and freshman Julian Gomez (160 pounds) also stepped up with solid performances.
“These are the guys that make a difference when we’re making our run for the CCS title,” Gonzalez said. “These guys are the intangibles who are starting to really wrestle at the caliber we want and I’m really pleased with that.”
Today, Hunter Collins, Andres Barragan, Tim Ibañez and Adin Dueñas leave for Los Angeles to compete in the Five Counties meet this weekend.
The rest of the team, Gonzalez said, will practice Thursday, Friday and Saturday and catch up on school work.
The JV team also emerged victorious against North Salinas Wednesday, but by a much tighter margin. The JV ‘Stangs won the dual meet 37-36 to also improve to 2-0.
