Bravo for Gilroy High School Principal Bob Bravo, and the rest of the school’s faculty, students and staff for hosting a wildly successful information night last week. The first-ever winter orientation drew a standing-room-only crowd of parents and eighth-grade students. For many parents, deciding whether to send their children to GHS next fall is a tough call.

In a move that we hope marks a change in attitude at the Gilroy Unified School District, school officials marketed themselves to their customers – the community. In these lean economic times, the school needs to attract as many local students – who bring with them $4,700 in state education funds each year – to become Mustangs as possible.

The 90-minute session highlighted many of the school’s strengths, including GHS’s music, academic and vocational programs. It also allayed many parents’ concerns, especially about quality of education and safety issues.

If GHS and GUSD can keep this mindset – that they offer a valuable service that they need to market to their customers – we bet they’ll find a lot more families sending their kids to our local public schools and a lot more support in the community in general.

More than 350 people spent an hour and a half listening to why they should save thousands of dollars each year by sending their kids to Gilroy High School. Congratulations to Bravo and the rest of his team for giving them the opportunity to learn what a great education GHS offers.

As GHS Student Body President Brian Camilpong said, “High school is what you make of it, wherever you decide to go.”

After last week’s orientation, many more community members are likely to give Gilroy High a go.
