Two Gilroy High teams might have shown why they are a step ahead of competition athletically.

It starts in the classroom.

During halftime of Friday’s Central Coast Section championship game for football at San Jose City College, the GHS varsity field hockey and girls cross-country teams were both honored on the field for having the highest cumulative grade point average of any teams in the section for their respective sports.

The field hockey team, coached by Adam and Erin Gemar, won a Tri-County Athletic League title before advancing to the quarterfinals of CCS this season, and had a GPA of 3.5714.

The girls cross-country team, coached by Art and Cathy Silva, also won a TCAL title and finished third in the section. The Mustangs had a GPA of 3.9512 to capture the CCS scholastic crown for the second straight year.
