City firefighters left Sunday to help combat about blazes in Southern California that have raged for days and displaced more than 500,000 residents. Six Gilroy firefighters went with two Gilroy and Morgan Hill engines to fight the Buckweed Fire in Los Angeles County, according to a fire department press release. As of Sunday, it had destroyed two homes, threatened 3,500 residences and was zero percent contained.

A total of seven engines and 30 firefighters were deployed from Santa Clara County to fight that fire and the Witch Fire in San Diego County.

Time to sign up for holiday assistance

The Salvation Army in Gilroy is accepting applications for Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. through Friday, and from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Oct. 29 through Nov. 2. Families with children 11 and younger may also apply for toys. There will be a final week of applications – from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Nov. 26 though Nov. 30 – for Christmas assistance only.

Candidate forum slated for tonight

A neighborhood candidate forum will take place tonight at the Monticelli Apartment Community Room, 841 Monticelli Drive. Mayor Al Pinheiro and Councilman Craig Gartman – running for mayor – will square off from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Council candidates Perry Woodward, Cat Tucker, Bob Dillon, Russ Valiquette, Roland Velasco and Tim Day will debate from 7 to 8 p.m.

Sale to benefit scholarship fund

Saint Louise Regional Hospital volunteers are sponsoring a fundraising event from 7am to 4pm Thursday and Friday in the cafeteria lobby.

The volunteers will sell Masquerade jewelry and accessories for $5. Masquerade is the nation’s largest $5 jewelry and accessories company. The public is invited to stop by and see what is available.

All proceeds benefit the Saint Louise Hospital Volunteers Student Scholarship fund.

Holiday Craft Faire this weekend

The Gilroy Elks Ladies for Local Children’s Charity is holding a holiday craft faire this weekend. More than 35 vendors will be selling wares from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, at the Gilroy Elks Lodge, 2765 Hecker Pass Highway.
