As the November election draws closer, The Dispatch has chosen to focus on the contentious aspects of Gilroy First’s! formation. In doing so, it has missed a crucial opportunity to shed light on the great and needed work Gilroy First! has been doing in recent weeks.
Gilroy First! is increasing civic participation by registering voters throughout Gilroy and planning public forums. Now that Gilroy First! has held its candidate forum, other groups want to hold one, too. Why? Because it is a great idea! Thank you, Gilroy First!.
The Dispatch can try to politicize the efforts of Gilroy First! all it wants, but the truth is that members of Gilroy First! will not sit idle when so many Gilroy residents are staying home during election day and when they do not know where candidates stand on important issues. We will increase civic participation and we will make Gilroy a place where elected officials are held accountable to all members of our community. Does that sound so radical? I think not.
