Six vehicles required to put out blaze
Gilroy – A car fender, a blackened cart, the lilac-colored wheel of a child’s toy and a mangled bicycle were just some of the sooty remains of a Gilroy family’s garage visible Tuesday after a two-alarm blaze consumed the garage Monday night.
The family was watching television Tuesday in their home at 1635 Teal Court, said Ed Bozzo, division chief at Gilroy Fire Department, when they heard the popping sounds of the flames. There was no fire alarm, Bozzo said. Instead, a neighbor, Mark Sanchez, phoned 911 and phoned the family, who escaped unharmed.
As firefighters arrived, just after 11pm, the flames poured from both sides of the garage, licking up into the attic, the house and the porch. Six fire trucks tamed the blaze: three from Gilroy Fire Department, two from South Santa Clara County Fire Protection District, and one from the California Department of Forestry. After 45 minutes, the fire was controlled.
Firefighters have yet to determine a cause, but Bozzo says the fire is not being investigated as arson.
