Mustangs get 35 shots
Nothing seems to slow down the Gilroy girls’ field hockey team in the Mission Trail Athletic League – not a nine-day layoff, not the prospect of facing Archbishop Mitty one day later and not even having several girls sidelined.

The Mustangs started slowly but finished in a hurry to slam Santa Catalina 11-0 Wednesday for their ninth straight MTAL victory.

Dana Schoeneman scored off two short corners during the first half and GHS (10-3-1 overall, 9-0 MTAL) had four overall during the one-sided game.

“We played short corners better,” Mustangs’ co-coach Adam Gemar said. “We showed huge improvement in that area. We’ve also been concentrating on scoring off re-directions outside the circle. While we didn’t score off any, we got more deflections than normal.”

Co-captains Schoeneman and Amanda Spellman had big games for Gilroy with three goals each. Schoeneman also had three assists and Spellman had one assist.

Other goal scorers for the Mustangs, who got off 35 shots, were Laura Spellman, Alicia Reese, Jaime Silva, Linsey Kwong and Samantha Saenz. Erin Magill had three assists, Russhelle Presshl had two assists, and Kwong, Lindsey Valadez and Elise Ogle (the team’s Player of the Game) had one assist apiece.

Goalie Stephanie Glenn stopped a breakaway three minutes into the game for Gilroy, which led 3-0 at halftime.

“Amanda and Dana did a good job keeping the girls together and focused,” Gemar said. “They have been strong leaders and the girls are playing well together.”

GHS figures to get a sterner test today when it hosts Mitty. The Monarchs already own two victories over the Mustangs.
