Starting Jan. 5, the Gilroy Library will be open six days a week and will expand hours on weekdays to better serve the community, according to a press release from the Santa Clara County Library District.
As it stands now, the library is closed on Sundays and Mondays. The library will be open from 1 to 9 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays as a result of the changes, and will operate from 10 to 6 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, according to the library district.
“We are very pleased to be able to expand library hours and open an additional day,” said Lani Yoshimura, head librarian at the Gilroy Library. “While these extra hours will benefit all South County residents, it will especially help those students who need access to education and information resources they might not have at home.”
The Gilroy Library was erected in 2012, following the passage of a local bond measure that funded its construction in 2008. Since its doors opened, the library district has been working to find the “most efficient combination of resources and staffing” to minimize operating expenses while at the same time serving the community, the press release states.
“We want our libraries to be open as much as possible,” added County Librarian Nancy Howe. “The combination of having a fully functioning, inviting, new library building, finding work efficiencies and the addition of a security guard have enabled us to expand service hours.”
The Gilroy Library is home to 190,000 individual volumes, including more than 400 periodicals and the largest Spanish language collection throughout the entire countywide library district. The building itself is the city’s first LEED certified building, an award given to buildings built with energy efficiency and environmental considerations in mind.
