A 73-year-old Gilroy man died Wednesday morning in western Nevada after a truck he was driving veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety.
Howard Coles was pronounced dead at the scene along U.S Highway 395 near Gardnerville, approximately 50 miles south of Reno.
A preliminary investigation indicates that Coles’ 2004 white Ford pick-up and trailer were traveling south when for unknown reasons he drifted into the northbound lane, striking a commercial vehicle driven by a Wisconsin resident, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety.
The driver of the commercial vehicle sustained minor injuries and was treated and released from a nearby hospital.
The roadway was closed for approximately five hours in both directions while traffic was diverted to an adjacent road next to the highway.
