GILROY – A judge Monday sentenced Quintin Daye of Gilroy to four years of probation on a child endangerment charges.

Daye once faced a possible 48-year prison sentence for charges that he sexually abused a local girl over a four-year period. A jury was unable to agree on a verdict, however. Eight favored acquittal, and four said Daye was guilty as the trial concluded Feb. 3.

Later that day, sensing the tide was against conviction, deputy district attorney Steve Fein offered to drop the five sex charges if Daye would plead guilty to child endangerment, a misdemeanor. Daye agreed.

Superior Court Judge Kenneth Shapero also ordered Daye not to work or volunteer with minors for the duration of his probation and not to contact the 17-year-old girl who accused him of having sex with her hundreds of times between 1999 and 2002, starting when she was 13.
