Mustangs defeat Alisal in 3 games, prepare for playoffs
Gilroy senior Kayla Meazell was not going to be denied in her final home volleyball game.

When Alisal made a run at the Mustangs at the end of the third game, Meazell asked for the ball. Her two kills finished out a 25-18, 25-16, 26-24 Tri-County Athletic League win over the Trojans.

“It was on my mind that it was my last game here,” Meazell said. “I wanted to step it up. The last couple of points I wanted to see if I could hit it down.”

Meazell finished the match with 14 kills and 15 digs. Jennifer Smith, the only other GHS senior, also came up big with 21 assists with many going to Meazell.

“I’ve watched her play since her sophomore year,” Alisal coach Javier Ramirez said of Meazell. “She really took control at times out there. We couldn’t stop her. She was outstanding.”

Gilroy (16-15 overall, 6-6 TCAL) started quickly, jumping ahead 12-3 lead in the first game and was never threatened. Michelle Coffin had three kills to start the second game for the Mustangs. Lindsay Meazell served eight straight points as GHS turned a one-point deficit into a 14-6 lead to take control.

Yadira Mejia, who combined with Irene De La Torre for 12 kills, served two straight aces to jumpstart the Trojans (14-19, 4-8) in the third game and Alisal led most of the way. Meazell had six kills in the final game.

Megan Leach had five of Gilroy’s 15 service aces. Brittany Balanesi had three aces. Cailtin Chisolm and Vanessa Wilkins combined for 16 digs.

“We were moving a little slow, but our passing was better,” GHS coach Sue Grogan said. “We were handling their hard-driven hits but not picking up their short game. The front row finally made the adjustments and we were able to cover the angles.”

The Mustangs now wait the CCS seeding meeting Saturday to find out where they start the playoffs.

Sub-varsity: The GHS junior varsity team won 25-18, 25-21, and the Mustang freshmen were also victorious, 25-22, 25-14.
