At 9 a.m. Thursday morning, detectives from the Gilroy Police Department served the arrest and search warrant for Jamie Diaz, 37, of the 580 block of Stoney Court, and booked him on a failure to register as a sex offender charge, according to a GPD press release.

Police say detectives also seized 30 marijuana plants and growing equipment, and booked Diaz for additional charges of cultivation of marijuana, for which he did not have a license.

In November 2010, a GPD officer had stopped and cited Diaz for driving with a suspended driver’s license. Police say the officer learned Diaz was a registered sex offender from Southern California, and that he believed Diaz may have been in violation of his registration requirements.

According to the press release, Gilroy police and detectives were able to develop probable cause to believe Diaz was living in Gilroy without registering properly, and subsequently sought the warrant which led to Diaz’s arrest.

The City of Gilroy has more than 100 known registered sex offenders currently residing within the city limits. Residents wishing for more information may check the Megan’s Law Database on-line at: www.meganslaw.ca.gov.
