The Gilroy Police Department is looking for a suspect they say stole a car and discarded a loaded gun after fleeing from authorities on foot.

A Gilroy resident on the 500 block of Fifth Street found the gun in his yard after a chase involving a helicopter took place at about 6 p.m. Dec. 7.

Nine GPD officers and a Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office helicopter pursued the suspect who was driving a stolen Subaru. He abandoned the vehicle at the intersection of Carmel and Fifth streets before fleeing on foot, according to the GPD.

The suspect is described as a 6-foot Hispanic male in his mid- to late-20s and weighs between 200 to 230 pounds, according to GPD Sgt. Chad Gallacinao.

The suspect was wearing a white T-shirt, black jeans and white shoes at the time of the chase and is still at large, Gallacinao said.

According to Gallacinao, a Gilroy resident reported finding the suspect’s discarded, loaded gun in his yard. There was also ammo laying around in the general area, Gallacinao said.

As of Tuesday, no charges have been filed, and there are no new developments.

“We’re attempting to evaluate the evidence located within the stolen vehicle and attempting to identify the outstanding suspect,” Gallacinao said.

Anyone with more information about the incident may call police at 846-0350 or leave an anonymous tip at 1-800-782-7463.
