GILROY – Gilroy High’s boys volleyball team had no trouble sweeping aside Seaside Tuesday night, rolling to a three-set victory: 25-9, 25-13, 25-14.

“We came out to play, which was good because we’ve been a little inconsistent the last couple weeks,” Gilroy coach Scott Martin said.

Greg Calimpong had eight digs and 32 assists, distributing passes across the board to allow three different Mustangs to eclipse eight kills.

Samuel Howard led Gilroy with 11 kills to go with five digs, Alfred Medenceles had eight kills and five digs and Etay Haramaty had eight kills. GHS’ Renz Campos stood in as libero for Nice Sandoval, who is being rested so he can compete in a junior varsity tournament later this season, and performed well with seven digs. Thomas Costa had three kills for the Mustangs.

Gilroy is still nipping at the heals of Tri-County Athletic League leader Hollister (16-7 overall, 7-0 TCAL) at 6-1 in league while improving to 14-3 on the season. The Mustangs, who are now a game ahead of third-place Monterey and two games up on fourth-place Salinas, have only lost to Hollister in TCAL play this season.

GHS will be back at home Thursday at 6:30 p.m. when it host Archbishop Mitty.
