Three Gilroy area seniors will get one more shot at playing high school football when they join the south roster for the 43rd annual Wedemeyer Classic.
Gilroy High’s Victor Sanchez and Eddie Vargas, Jr. will join Noah Liberatore from Christopher to try to make it three years in a row for the South to win the annual all star game.
The Wedemeyer Classic is named after football coach Charlie Wedemeyer with Los Gatos High School who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. He died after living with the disease for more than 30 years in 2010.
The game originally was dubbed the Silicon Valley Youth Classic, but was renamed for Wedemeyer following his death.
The classic give players from around Santa Clara County a chance for one final hurrah before moving on to college.
The South will be coached by Leigh High School’s Kyle Padia
Sanchez was a standout two-way player on the line, playing both center and as a defensive lineman.
Vargas was a receiving threat as well as helping to anchor a defensive secondary as cornerback.
Liberatore led the Cougars in receiving with 404 yards through five games with three touchdowns.
The three from Gilroy will be among six from the South Valley with Alex Cornejo and Zach Heffernan from Live Oak and Isaiah Fernandez from Sobrato.
Kick off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday at Levis Stadium.
