Gilroy’s varsity girls soccer team moved two games closer to sealing a Tri-County Athletic League championship Tuesday, defeating Alvarez 5-0 at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex.

The Mustangs were led by freshman Erin Slattery’s two scores. Sara Hugo, Kristi Figueroa and Ariana Vera each provided Gilroy’s other goals.

GHS coach Jose Hernandez said the play of his seven freshmen this season, including Slattery, has been a pleasant surprise.

“Every year we look at what we have and do the best with what we have,” Hernandez said. “My second year, I was expecting one player to come in and she never did. So, we never expect anything (from freshmen).

“(This season) we looked at it and the freshmen fit perfectly into the style we like to play.”

The Mustangs are now 8-4-3 overall, 7-0-1 in league. With four regular season games remaining, Gilroy would lock up the TCAL title with two more victories. After that, challenging for a Central Coast Section title is certainly possible.

“If we win league, we get the first CCS game at home,” Hernandez said. “And then we host the second round (game) as a school. So, we have a good opportunity.”

The coach quickly added that plenty still needs to be done before that point.

“Our first half (Tuesday) showed us we still don’t know how to dictate a pace,” Hernandez said. “The second half we did better. How consistent can we do that? I don’t know. That’s what the next four games are going to tell us.

“Nothing is a gimme here.”

Gilroy’s next game will be Friday at 6 p.m. when it hosts Notre Dame.
