GILROY – Gilroy High’s girls soccer team found a good way to go on vacation, even if its coach still sees plenty of room for improvement.

Defeating visiting Watsonville 2-0 on Friday at Garcia-Elder Sports Complex in Gilroy, the Mustangs improved to 4-1-2 on the season. They will have the next two weeks off, as no game is scheduled until a Dec. 30 matchup with Santa Teresa.

Ariana Vera scored in the first 10 minutes of the game, giving her five on the season, and Katelyn Nebesnick added another goal in the first five minutes of the second half. Rahni Giardina assisted on Nebesnick’s goal, while Vera made an outstanding individual effort to beat the keeper.

Gilroy coach Jose Hernandez, as expected, was pleased with the win, but said his team was coasting too much in the end.

“We kind of got a little out of our structure,” he said. “What got us a two-goal lead, we kind of got away from that.”

He added that the team will need to keep working on the little things.

“I think all of our goals allowed have been in the second half, so we’ll be addressing that (over the break),” Hernandez said. “We kind of lose our rhythm, our flow, in the second half, so right now it’s learning to keep that going.”
