Three goals from sophomore striker Cynthia Sanchez highlighted an all-out offensive assault as the Gilroy High girls soccer team cruised by Notre Dame 7-0 on Friday night in Gilroy.
Sanchez’s hat trick, along with tallies by CC Contreras, Indra Garcia, Alex Maldonado and Taylor Slattery, provided the Mustangs (5-2-3, 2-0 TCAL) with their second straight runaway Tri-County Athletic League victory of the week. GHS dispatched Alisal 6-1 on Wednesday.
However, looming on the horizon is a match-up with rival San Benito – a team that has yet to drop a tilt this season (6-0-4, 2-0 TCAL).
The Balers, led by top goal producer Karly Leon (9), have experienced little trouble in their two league games thus far, shaking off both North Salinas and Salinas 4-0 last week, setting up Wednesday’s encounter, where the winner will have an early grasp on the top of the standings.
Despite the win-loss column implications, head coach Jose Hernandez is more concerned with making sure his team is taking the necessary steps to honing its effort on the field rather than concentrating on the opponent on the other side.
“We’re focused on improving our timing and understanding of our formation,” Hernandez wrote via text message on Monday. “I’m just focused on getting us on the same page.”
Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m. in Hollister.
