The Gilroy High girls golf team, which features four players, began the 2012 season Thursday against Santa Catalina at Del Monte Golf Course.
Santa Catalina, the defending league champions, defeated the Mustangs 244 to 363.
“Our Gilroy Girls showed great Mustang spirit in our first league match, at a golf course that was set up for a NCGA Amateur qualifier earlier that day,” GHS coach Daniel Valdez wrote in an email.
Valdez added that No. 1 golfer Melissa Peterson was strong off the tee, No. 2-player Cierra Montoya-Valdez played well around the greens, LaTherian Harrison kept her ball out of trouble and newcomer Kaley Lance finished well.
Santa Catalina’s Chloe Corriveau, who eagled the final hole, edged out teammate Kiley Gibbs for medalist honors with a 38.
