Dear Editor,
On behalf of all the teachers who work in Gilroy’s schools, I would like to thank The Dispatch for publicizing the fact that teachers spend much of their own money for basic classroom supplies. I would like to add another bit of information to the story.
Last year, the Gilroy Unified School District spent $47, 000 for legal costs incurred in laying off five certificated staff members.
This year, for various reasons, every one of those employees was hired back, although some are working fewer hours for less money.
In June, there were 530 certificated staff, but not all of those people were in the classroom. If we use 500 as our figure for the number of people who needed to purchase supplies for this year, that $47,000 divided among them equally would have meant $94 per classroom.
It’s all a matter of priorities.
