First annual gathering meets on Monterey Rd., Gilroy.
Richard Gonzales cooks a turkey in downtown Gilroy. Local volunteers spent their weekend barbecuing the big birds for needy families at the First Annual Great Gilroy Gobbler’s Gathering. The event took place Saturday and Sunday on Monterey Road. Safeway donated 100 turkeys. The turkeys were given to local charities and a nearby migrant camp, said Steve Ashford, who with his wife Linda owns Ashford’s Antinques. Ashford said he hopes the event will become a Gilroy staple. “These were people who were definitely in need of a good turkey,” he said.
