Dear Editor,

The Dispatch headline says “Mixed Bag” when reporting on the candidates for GUSD Trustee. On the day after Thanksgiving, I say that it is wonderful that five unexpected candidates – as well as the expected candidate Bob Heisey – that bring so much talent were willing to sign up for such a difficult and often thankless position.

n We have two fine individuals who have served the district long and well in the past. They obviously have significant experience and skills.

n A new face applies – whom I do not know – but I hear is a quality person and who appears to have leadership and educational oversight experience. No matter what, I hope the district finds a challenging assignment for him.

n I have been associated with Javier Aguirre in three community organizations. There are few who have near the potential he has to be an outstanding community leader or if he chooses, a leader at a higher level. If he retains his work ethic, sincerity, positive attitude and overall qualities he will go far.

n TJ was a good friend who closely shared the same philosophies with me on public schools. He believed that all children deserved the opportunity to be challenged to their maximum and be prepared to succeed in life – regardless of their background or their parent’s ability or interest to be heard from.

TJ – having been an administrator and a board member understood the difference in roles of school administrators and trustees. He believed in improving or removing ineffective staff. But he also believed that effective staff needed to be respected for their professional knowledge and supported in order to attract and retain top people and achieve the excellence we all want.

Brenda Owens – a professional educator – knows better than anyone TJ’s beliefs and is determined to continue his efforts to accomplish these objectives and fulfill the voter’s desires.

I wish to thank all for stepping up to improving our children and our community and for making my decision not to apply for consideration an easy one. I will continue to support the district where needed.

Our six fine, caring trustees will, as always, have a difficult selection task but have a very good pool to choose from.

Bob Kraemer, Gilroy

Editor’s note: Mr. Kraemer apparently read some negativity into the headline “Mixed Bag” and missed our editorial Cheer that began, “For the number of residents who have thrown their hat into the ring for a seat on the Gilroy School Board.” It is indeed wonderfully refreshing to have so many qualified people interested in serving on the school board, and to have such diversity within that group.
