CALLER 1: I read earlier in the week that Sobrato got a new head varsity football coach. I’m just wondering what Gilroy High School has planned for a head football coach. Football’s right around the corner. We need the spring ball set up. We need offseason weight training going. I’m just curious to see what Gilroy High School has planned for a new head football coach. I haven’t heard anything at all.
GREEN PHONE: A fine question, Caller 1. Over the past few months, the school has opened up the position in-house and to applicants outside Gilroy High. The acceptance period for outside applications ended a couple weeks ago, so the administration is busy narrowing down candidates for the job right now. But keep an eye on the sports section. The Dispatch will have the story as soon as it breaks.
CALLER 2: Hey, I was just calling about your senior article (Feb. 15 sports section) with the basketball players and I thought it was really cool. But we still haven’t seen an article about the cheerleaders. Actually, I even heard about two of them that went to London this year. Hopefully we’ll be able to hear about that.
GREEN PHONE: Turns out, others would too, Caller 2. Read on …
CALLER 2: I just finished reading the story about the GHS basketball seniors, the ones being honored at the boys Senior Night tonight and the girls tomorrow and once again, the spirit leaders are left out of the recognition. There are also six senior spirit leaders on the varsity squad who will be honored at the boys game tonight and four of them have been spirit leaders at GHS for all four of their high school years. These GHS spirit leaders work hard, they practice hard, attend games, both football and basketball. They entertain at games and school rallies. They promote school spirit and get little or no recognition from their hometown paper. So sports page, what’s your excuse? Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: Callers 2 and 3, how about we not make excuses and just give you what you ask for? The senior cheerleaders will be recognized in tomorrow’s paper. While the sports section does not necessarily cover cheerleading, we do realize they work hard and are a big part of high school sports.
CALLER 4: Hi, I’m just calling about you using the “Mustangs” name in the newspaper again. I appreciate that. I got tired of looking at that old ‘Stangs deal that you were using, so keep up the good work.
GREEN PHONE: Glad you are pleased, Caller 4. We don’t mind typing the extra letters for our readers.
CALLER 5: I have a question with regards to the medal winnings on the Olympics. I thought the Korean team was all one team, not separated into North and South anymore? How come it’s listed as South Korea in the paper when it should just be Korea? Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: Uh oh. A world affairs question for the sports section. Actually, Caller, the North and South Korean teams are separate, which explains why they’re not simply put under Korea. If you look at any medal count list, you’ll see each have their winnings tallied separately.
