CALLER 1: Hey, Green Phone. I’m a big softball fan here in Gilroy and I just wanted to say I thought you did a pretty good job of tracking the Gilroy High softball team this year. I noticed in a couple articles you mentioned some of the starters were out. But who were some of the kids who jumped in and stepped up to keep that team going? Love to hear a little bit more about them and what do we have to expect to watch for next year? And another thing, I know Gilroy High put out a lot of softball players into the college ranks and I’d love to hear about where they are now. There’s Sarah Caudle and we know Sarah Villar is going to Sonoma State, Kayla Aldridge, and I think Jen Olvera. I’d love to see you do a section on where they are now, just to keep track of them. And don’t forget Bria DeLorenzo. Take care, thanks again, you did a great job. Bye.

GREEN PHONE: Thanks for the comments, Caller 1. To answer your first question, several players on the Gilroy softball team stepped up in the absence of three starters who were out during the final stretch of the season. In particular, sophomore Angelica Galindo filled in nicely at third base and freshman Jasmine Perez provided some much-needed offensive power. Perez’s late-game three-run home run in the first round of the CCS playoffs was a big reason the Mustangs were able to oust Mt. Pleasant. With just two seniors not returning – Villar and Liz Ines – the Mustangs will clearly have plenty of returning talent for next year. The Gilroy freshman and JV teams also had successful seasons, meaning many of those players will be able to step nicely into the varsity ranks in the future. As for the second part of your call, yes, the GHS softball program has produced several college players. Caudle, who went on to be an All-American at Baylor, just coached Archbishop Mitty team to its second consecutive Division II CCS title. Aldridge (St. Mary’s), DeLorenzo (Notre Dame de Namur) and Olvera (Vanguard) have also made their marks at the next level. Your idea to catch up with them is a good one. We’ll keep it in mind.

CALLER 2: I want to order a picture that you have in the sports section. How do I go about doing that?

GREEN PHONE: Excellent question, Caller 2. If you would like to order a photo that has appeared in the sports section, contact the Dispatch’s chief photographer Chris Riley by calling 847-7140 or e-mail him at cr****@************ch.com. Be sure to let him know on what date the photo ran.
