CALLER 1: I just called to say, what is with the black and white sports section? They’ve always been color, and now you’re going back to black and while? What’s the deal, don’t you know that color looks better? Use color!

GREEN PHONE: We couldn’t agree more, Caller 1. Color is better. Otherwise, the Green Phone can’t fully live up to its name. The colorless sports sections you’ve seen in the past couple weeks weren’t done that way by choice. A press malfunction left black and white as the only option. But, as you can see by today’s section, that problem has been fixed and the Dispatch will continue printing its sports in color.

CALLER 2: I was just wondering if you guys were going to publish the girls and boys all-league selections in the paper. I haven’t seen it so if you guys can put the all-league selections in the paper, I’d appreciate it. Thanks, Bye.

GREEN PHONE: Caller 2, hopefully you caught this Wednesday’s (“Winter Wonders,” March 8) sports cover story on the Gilroy High athletes that received All-Tri-County Athletic League honors this winter. If you missed it, you can find it online at gilroydispatch.com or you can stop by our office at 6400 Monterey Rd. and pick up a copy.

CALLER 3: Just wanted to remind you about Gilroy varsity boys golf. They’ve already started their season. Thanks a lot, bye.

GREEN PHONE: Thanks for the reminder, Caller 3. You can count on coverage of the GHS boys golf this season. If it ever stops raining.

CALLER 4: I just wanted to say you’ve done a great job doing all the Gilroy wrestling articles all year, but you’ve done one wrestler a disservice. One of the wrestlers that you hardly ever talk about, hardly ever mention, one of the best wrestlers on the team never got any kudos, never got much of anything. And it’s such a shame, because senior Adin Dueñas, he has done so much this year on the team. He placed third in state. He’s going to Fresno State. He’s a good kid, great grades, awesome wrestler who’s done amazing at tournaments, placed first in a number of tournaments I can recall. But in your article on Tuesday (“What A Run,” March 7) on the state meet, you barely mention him. And you don’t even put his picture up there. He’s always forgotten about and it’s so disappointing because he’s one of the best wrestlers on the squad, very solid, very good kid, awesome, wonderful person and I just wish you would print a little bit more about him because I think he’s done more for the program than so many other kids.

GREEN PHONE: We hope Dueñas reads the nice words you’ve said about him, Caller 4. Because they are all true. Dueñas is the unsung hero of the wrestling team and one of the most reliable forces when the big match is on the line. Off the mat, he is humble, kind and hard-working. Lots of young wrestlers look up to him, and rightfully so. He is a great role model. The Green Phone would like to point out a few things about the paper’s state wrestling coverage. You say that the Dispatch did not use a picture of Dueñas in our coverage, despite his third-place finish. But he was actually featured in the main photo for the sports cover story. Additionally, we wanted to make the state wrestling story as much about the whole team performance as possible. Dueñas was the subject of a decent portion of the story and we tried to sufficiently recognize his third-place finish. The Dispatch sports department has done its best all season to recognize the efforts of a team not filled with one or two, but many stars all deserving of coverage.
