Caller 1: I think it’s great the school district has approved an artificial turf surface for Gilroy High School. It’s even greater that our hometown hero Jeff Garcia has donated money to the project, which will be named the Garcia-Elder Sports Complex. The key words here are “sports complex.” So when I heard the rumor that the new turf field wasn’t going be lined for field hockey play due to its expense, I was hoping it was just that, a rumor. Can you please clarify this for me? I feel that this project has been presented to everyone as a multi-use field and it would be a shame not to line it for its intended uses. Erin and Adam Gemar have done an incredible job building the field hockey program. The team has been league champs, gone to CCS and has produced many great athletes. It would be a slap in the face of many to line the field for only the other sports, football and soccer, leaving off the lines for this prosperous field hockey program. I’d appreciate it if you would look into this for me.
Green Phone: You’ll be relieved to learn, Caller 1, that the only slaps related to the new turf at Mustang Stadium will be slapshots off the sticks of the girls in the Gilroy field hockey program. GHS athletic director Jack Daley assures Green Phone that the new field will be lined for field hockey. There is some debate about whether to make the two dashed circles around goal temporary or permanent, so perhaps this is the origin of the rumor you heard. Just to clarify, with the new artificial surfaces available, it’s possible to apply temporary lines that can be removed and re-applied as necessary for whatever sport is being played on the surface at the time. Whether Gilroy High goes in this direction or chooses to make all lines permanent for all sports is still under discussion, according to Daley.
Caller 2: First let me thank you for all the wonderful work you do covering our local sports. In case you don’t hear it often enough, here’s a “thank you” for your time covering our local athletes. We as parents so enjoy reading about our children and their school activities.
I did want to let you know, however, that in the article on the TCAL tournament this past weekend in Hollister there was an error regarding the 160-lb. weight class. This was the first time that Chuck Thompson of Hollister had ever wrestled Hunter Collins of Gilroy. At the dual meet the week prior, Thompson had wrestled Luis Albarron of Gilroy and in fact Thompson won that match. Also, Thompson in no way “almost pinned” Collins of Gilroy, this wasn’t even the case. Collins dominated the match. The confusion may have come from the match that came immediately after.
Green Phone: Caller 2, thank you for your kind words, and we wish we had lived up to them better by getting the facts straight on the TCAL wrestling finals. We’ve spoken with the reporter who covered the Collins-Thompson match, and he admits he may indeed have mixed it up in his notes with the match that followed. We appreciate your pointing this error out to us. Due to an editing error, we also got Thompson mixed up with reigning CCS champion Dan Montanez, whom Collins beat two weeks in a row earlier this season at the Overfelt Tournament and then at the Mid-Cals. We apologize for these errors. We do strive to get the facts right on whatever we report. Anytime readers are able to set us straight when we make a mistake is more than welcome – the important thing is to get the correct information out there.
Caller 3: I was at the girls’ basketball game against Monta Vista last night, and they announced McKenna Logan as “Logan McKenna” in the introductions. I remember there was some kind of furor over you guys getting names backwards on the Gilroy team in your paper, so I thought you might want to know about that.
Green Phone: Yes, Caller 3, there was a bit of a controversy in our Letters section a few weeks back about getting names right for the Lady Mustangs. Apparently there was a roster produced by somebody at GHS that had Logan’s name backwards … and it appears that roster is still being circulated to the senior forward’s probable dismay. We’re happy to say that after 28 girls’ basketball games this season (and hopefully at least a few more to come), this paper knows McKenna Logan’s proper name by heart.
