Parking, Garcia, Stanford
…
Caller 1: I know it’s not much money, but I wasn’t thrilled to see I’ll have to be paying $2 to park over at our PUBLIC Gilroy High School for football games this fall. Is this actually going to something useful or is it just another extra charge they know they can get away with because they know people will pay it? Anyway, that kind of irked me.
The Green Phone, always on the lookout for unnecessary charges, checked into this parking matter and found out the new charge is actually very much necessary. According to Gilroy athletic director Jack Daley, the money will be used to help off-set nearly $25,000 worth of district budget cuts. And the cash will be distributed to all sports programs, not just football.
“More and more schools are doing it – that’s just the reality of the times,” Daley said. “Some schools are actually charging students fees, but we didn’t want to do that.”
Daley wanted to remind Mustang fans of two things. For $150, they can purchase an all-sport, all-season pass which includes a parking permit.
And for free, football parking is still available on all the surrounding streets, as well as the 10th Street parking lot.
Caller 2: Hi, I just want to make sure you guys will still be covering Jeff Garcia this season. Just because he’s all the way out in Cleveland doesn’t mean people around here don’t still care about him.
You can be assured the sports department hasn’t lost sight of that. No matter if he’s playing in Canada, California or Ohio, area football fans have every right to be proud of their hometown kid. Unless we hold the bake sale to end all bake sales, it’s doubtful we’ll be able to budget in many trips to Cleveland. But we will give special attention to the Browns and make sure everyone is kept up-to-date.
Caller 3: My beef is that in reading Thursday’s paper about the Balers’ water polo games on Wednesday afternoon, you mentioned three out of the four teams winning, but nothing about the JV girls. They also won … and would love to be mentioned. Thanks.
Geez, no wonder they wanted to be mentioned. The junior varsity Lady ‘Balers beat up on Gilroy, 14-2. The future of girls’ water polo at Hollister certainly looks to be in good hands.
Caller 4: I realize they shouldn’t be priority No. 1, but I’m a Stanford man from way, way back and I’d just like to see an occasional mention of them in my sports pages. They are in our county, after all. And not everyone has the Internet as an easy resource for team information and schedules and stuff. So anyway, just thought I’d mention that.
Thanks for the feedback. Your Tuesday sports page this fall will be jam-packed with all kinds of local football recaps. We’ll try to squeeze in as much information on your Cardinal as we can – as well as updates on San Jose State and your pals from Berkeley. For now, here’s Stanford’s schedule for the upcoming football season. Feel free to count down the days until hoops …
