CALLER 1: I was kind of disappointed that I did not hear about any freshmen for the Mustang football team. Reading the article, you would assume that only the JVs and the varsity had scrimmaged against the other three schools. However, the freshmen were very much on that field and did a great job both offensively and defensively and they were exciting to watch. I just feel that they needed to get some recognition. For freshmen coming in, they need a little bit of a morale booster and just wanted to say you were doing a great job otherwise. Thanks.
GREEN PHONE: Caller 1, you’re right – we didn’t focus at all on the freshman football team in the story about the scrimmage at Gilroy High last Friday. But rest assured you’ll be seeing some freshman game scores and highlights this season. Same goes for the junior varsity. Even though our coverage focuses mostly on varsity sports, we know the lower levels are working hard, too, and they definitely deserve some recognition for that.
CALLER 2: So what’s with Queens of the Court in the newspaper today? The queens of the court are the volleyball team. They won the tournament over the weekend in Santa Cruz. I think you need that in the paper.
GREEN PHONE: OK, the Phone doesn’t want to discourage anyone from calling in, but if you would like us to respond to your beef, it needs more specific details and info than that! Which volleyball team? Which tournament? We could give the team props right here if we knew that stuff.
CALLER 3: My beef is the Football Focus pullout section you had in Tuesday’s paper . It wasn’t very good. You could have done a lot more better. More pictures, more information on players. It was really bad. Thank you.
GREEN PHONE: Sorry the section didn’t live up to your expectations, Caller 3. Hopefully we can make it up to you with our coverage during the season.
CALLER 4: Yeah, I was just calling to let you guys know that in your Football Focus insert in the Aug. 30 paper you’ve got the same schedules down for the Gilroy Mustangs and the San Benito Haybalers. Thanks.
GREEN PHONE: We’re blushing, Caller 4. You caught our mistake. The Gilroy schedule was printed twice in Football Focus and we apologize to San Benito fans for that. The correct San Benito Haybalers schedule is on B2.
CALLER 5: Thank you for your coverage Sept. 1 of Junior Giants Day. My nephews were also in attendance at that game as they are in the Junior Giants program in Paso Robles. In 2002, my nephew Will Bedell was chosen as Junior Giant of the Year and received a scholarship along with throwing out the first pitch of that game. During the game he was seated next to the great pitcher Vida Blue. He continues his Junior Giants scholarship program by coaching a team that includes his brother Kai. He also plays first base and outfield on his high school baseball team. This is a remarkable program the Giants organization offers to youths from all areas of California. They not only provide a team sport environment but the program encourages our youths to further their education. Congratulations to the players and coaches of the Gilroy Junior Giants!
GREEN PHONE: Caller 5, thanks for sharing your Junior Giants story. The day was a blast for the kids. We’re behind any organization that helps kids get into sports! A pat on the back goes to the Mexican American Community Services Agency (MACSA) for running the Gilroy Junior Giants program.
