Date extended due to incumbent late filing
Gilroy – The Gilroy Unified School District board race was extended five days, since two of the four incumbents up for reelection didn’t file by the Friday deadline.

Locals have until 5pm on Wednesday to make a decision. David McRae and Jim Rogers, the two incumbents who didn’t seek reelection, are the only individuals who may not take advantage of the extended deadline.

But if no additional candidates file next week, incumbents Javier Aguirre and Tom Bundros and newcomers Denise Apuzzo and Ardy Ghoreishi, will run unopposed. Resident Francisco Dominguez, who was previously reported to be running for the GUSD board, picked up papers but has yet to file.

Aguirre was appointed in December to serve the remainder of the late TJ Owens’ term. The Gilroy native serves as senior policy aide for Santa Clara County Supervisor Blanca Alvarado and has one young child.

Apuzzo, a Gilroy Realtor, has three children enrolled in Gilroy schools, including the high school and Brownell Middle School. She regularly attends board meetings and stays abreast of school district issues.

Tom Bundros, the father of six children ranging in age from 39 to 18, is finishing up the final year of his first term. He’s a software engineer for Hitachi in San Jose. Ardy Ghoreishi is a father and volunteers for various district committees including the Christopher High School Steering Committee.

Meanwhile, the filing period for all of the Gavilan College school board races is closed. All four incumbents in all three districts filed for reelection. Five individuals are vying for two of five seats in the San Benito County district.

Incumbents Kent Child and Elvira Robinson and three new candidates including Dee Brown, educator/Realtor; Angie De La Cruz, parent and Reba M. Jones, retired educator, have filed for the District 3 race which represents San Benito County, are running

Laura Perry is the sole candidate vying for a seat in District 2, the north end of Santa Clara County including Coyote Valley and Morgan Hill. And in District 1 or Gilroy, incumbent and vice president of the board Deb Smith also is running unopposed.
